My purpose in writing this book has been to establish a bridge between
the past and the present, to give the reader in this last decade of the
20th century a glimpse of the Europe that has been left behind. Out
of its ashes has arisen hope; out of its divisions, a growing unity.
What was the dream of schoolboys in 1941 is approaching reality.
Our generation has accomplished this much. It will be up to others
to preserve and to enlarge upon it.  |
